Workshop Description

Instructor: Jason Mullinax Note: This is a half day camp. Music Discovery Lab is where music and science intersect for a mind blowing, sensory filled week of fun and hands on experience. (Some of the projects in the afternoon camp is more complex than than in the am camp, thus the age range difference.) In this seriously fun workshop, you'll create and explore sound through instrument building and guided experimentation in a fun and casual environment with drum instructor and veteran musician Jason Mullinax of Music Discovery Lab. During this week-long course, you'll make and take home an electrified Springzinger and a small DIY amplifier plus the knowledge of how to play them in creative ways. Then you'll run your electric Springzinger through various loop and distortion pedals that will make you feel like a rock star. You'll also do fun experiments to learn more about the science of sound You'll also make an Atari Punk Synthesizer and a cigar box amplifier to make your music loud! With a primary goal of unleashing creativity and fostering experimentation, Music Discovery Lab is appropriate for students of all musical backgrounds; no experience is necessary. Ages: 10-14 Screentime Rating: 0 Tech Resume Skills: Percussion skills, a basic understanding the science of sound, safe care and use of a power drill, a heat gun and a soldering iron. Familiarity with different guitar pedals and other music tools. Reuse: Cigar boxes for amplifiers
